BLÜCHER Special Curved Pipes
BLÜCHER’s MENA office in Dubai has recently won an order for the new King Abdul Aziz International Airport Jeddah expansion (Phase 1).
200 mm diameter BLÜCHER EuroPipe is being supplied for the roof drainage system. In total there will be 4.5 km of pipes. 2.7 km of this pipe is a customized BLÜCHER Push-fit EuroPipe with a curved radius of 26 meters for Vision Electro Mechanical Company (Vision).
A curved pipe was designed to follow the architectural contour of the facade and the glazed section. With almost 50 years of experience BLÜCHER had to think outside the box for a solution. A plan was put in place to design special tools, adjust our manufacturing equipment and with some trade secrets to cater for the curving of the 200 mm diameter pipe. “The result was what we expected and the costumer was satisfied that we could manufacture and supply a curved Push-fit pipe system.” Says Brian Doyle, Area Sales Manager, BLÜCHER MENA.
With the extreme weather conditions in Saudi Arabia, plastic or PVC were not an option being exposed to the sunlight and heat. These components were also not aesthetically pleasing to look at as a solution for such a major project with a 670.000 m2 passenger terminal.
Construction work on KAIA airport began in 1974, and was finalized in 1980. Finally, on 31 May 1981, the airport opened for service after being officially inaugurated in April 1981. After many successful years in operation and passenger numbers starting to rise the decision was taken to undertake a major expansion.
The project will be built in 3 phases. Phase 1 is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2016.
